Contemporary Art - Contemporary Paintings Guide

Contemporary art focuses primarily on the here and now. It may be as colorful as a painting that incorporates every imaginable shade and color of the rainbow, or as stark as a black and metal chair sitting alone in an all white room.

Contemporary art is not limited to one genre, such as oil painting or acrylic painting. Contemporary art may come from the mixing of oil and acrylic painting, or from the use of photography as an art medium.

Many contemporary artists get their inspiration from magazine and/or book covers, or pictures in those and other publications. They will frequently render the photographs depicted into a painting or even a sculpture.

Subjects and themes are literally all over the place, and may include animals, people, landscapes, exteriors and interiors of buildings, geometric shapes, sculpture, and pictures of sculpture, to name a few.

Contemporary art can invoke every emotion known to man, and quite possibly a few that are not. It can be as whimsical as a cat with a distinctly startled expression on its face to as macabre as a skeleton wearing a purple dress and red hat.

Because of this, it may take a little imagination when incorporating contemporary art into home decor. For the most part, the overall appearance of the home will need to be fairly modern, although it might be possible to make a piece of contemporary art fit into an older style (such Early American, antebellum, etc.)

You may want to consider contemporary art for such areas in your home as the bedrooms, especially older childrens and teens rooms, or for areas such as dens or family rooms. Contemporary art will lend itself well to a very modern bathroom, especially one with separate dressing and/or changing areas.

It might be a good idea in this case to let the art fit the room instead of the room fit the art. Contemporary art, as stated earlier, is all about right here, right now, and a room that is designed around a particular piece of artwork may unfortunately become dated or outmoded fairly quickly. Better to choose a piece of artwork that will pretty much fit into any style.

Contemporary art that uses geometric designs for a theme will be a good choice. The bold, clean lines will go with just about any decorating scheme in any room of the house.
