Canvas Art - A Buyers Guide To Canvas Art
The term canvas art simply means artwork, such as a painting or tapestry that is on a surface made from canvas material (the type used to make painters drop cloths or reusable bags, for instance.)
What makes canvas art so unique is the fact that canvas material has a different texture than other materials used to make painting surfaces. The fibers are more absorbent. Because of this, some artists choose to prime the canvas material with a substance called gesso before they start to paint. Other artists choose to leave the canvas natural or unprimed.
Primed canvas material will have a white or slightly off-white color. Unprimed canvas material will be whatever color the original cloth was usually beige or tan, although canvas material does come in different colors and can be painted on.
Canvas done on a primed surface will look like a normal painting. In other words, the colors and shapes will be clearly defined. Canvas art on unprimed canvas will actually appear as though the cloth had been stained by the colors rather than the colors painted on to the cloth.
Canvas material is also used for creating artwork such as embroidery, needlework, cross-stitch, or other needle-and-thread projects. The weight of canvas material used will determine how the finished product will look. Lighter-weight canvas will allow for smaller, more delicate stitches made with a lighter-weight thread, creating a more subtle form of canvas art, while heavier-weight canvas will require heavier thread. Needle-and-thread canvas art on heavier-weight material may have a more 3-D or raised appearance.
Like everything else, your choice of portraits painted on primed or unprimed canvas depends on your preference. If you like paintings that look like paintings, then your artwork that you choose will be on primed canvas. If you like the slightly more unusual stained appearance that unprimed canvas gives to artwork, then you will choose that particular type of painting.
If you use needle-and-thread artwork for home decor purposes, like many people do, again the type you choose will be that which suits your decorating needs or tastes. If you are aiming for a rough or rustic look, you may want to buy canvas art that was done on heavy canvas fabric. On the other hand, a young girls room may require the most delicate lightweight piece of canvas art you can find.
