Realize The Dream

Stories of starving artists, or those who became famous only after their deaths, or those whose works were known only because of certain aspects of their lives are as numerous as the different types of artwork that can be found. Fortunately, these were, or are, the exception rather than the rule.

The artist who wishes to become well-known only needs to remember two words: Sell yourself. This does not mean to actually put one’s person on the market; rather, I am referring to getting the attention of those who can help one achieve recognition, as well as those who may be interested in owning or procuring the artist’s works. Many artists literally start on the street, by displaying their works in public areas. This can include anywhere people congregate or frequent, such as parks, transportation access points, or routes to and from tourist attractions.

Others take advantage of opportunities in which artists, crafts persons, and others in similar fields are invited to display and sell their pieces. These can include arts and crafts shows, and annual regional events, such as fairs, festivals, and other venues. They are allotted a space specifically for their use, often for free or for a nominal charge. The important thing that the artist who is ready to become well-known can do is to take advantage of as many of the above-listed events, as well as any others which may be offered, as possible. This is usually very easy to do, as the dates for many of these are usually around the same time, or as close to it as possible, each year. The artist can frequently plan ahead as much as six months to a year in advance, and make any necessary arrangements beforehand.

Another way is to rent or lease a portion of an already-occupied art gallery space. It may initially be only one corner of an existing shop whose proprietor is willing to share space in exchange for help with expenses (rent, utilities, etc.) As the artist and the artist’s work become more recognizable, the opportunity for expansion will occur.
