Acrylic Paintings - Helpful Guide To Acrylic Paintings

Acrylic paintings are those which are created from an acrylic-based paint. One of the most popular forms is the watercolor style.

Acrylics can be just as beautiful as oil paintings. Because the technique for making, mixing, and applying acrylic paint has improved over the years, it is sometimes very hard to distinguish an acrylic painting from an oil painting.

Unlike oils, acrylic paintings dry faster, leaving the artist little, if any, room to make changes or correct errors. However, some artists actually find this to be a good thing, as they can actually work more quickly.

Acrylic reflects and disperses light differently than oil paintings do. This has an effect on how a painting will look in different lighting venues. This can be an asset, however, to someone who is using acrylic paintings in home decor art. An acrylic painting hung in just the right spot may seem to have many distinctive looks, depending on how the light changes in a room in conjunction with the sunlight.

Acrylic paintings are for the most part bright, bold, and colorful. Some lie flat against the canvas, that is, if you run your hand over them, they feel smooth. Others have substance, and can be raised slightly or even have so many layers of paint on them as to almost resemble a sculpture. These contrasts in surface appearance only serve to offer you more choices, letting you mix and/or match, whichever you choose.

The majority of acrylic paintings, except for the abstract ones, have clear, well-defined lines and shapes, which only serve to heighten the bright colors that are used. Buildings seem to literally stand out from blue sky behind them, and you can almost hear the waves as they lap the shore, that is how bright they are.

The subjects and themes are almost endless. Nature scenes particularly lend themselves well to the acrylic painting technique, although architectural subjects are equally impressive. People will range from photograph quality clear to so muted as to almost be considered an afterthought.

For this reason, there is no room in the house that is wrong for an acrylic painting. A childs bedroom may be just the place for that whimsical clown (unless, of course, the child is deathly afraid of clowns in that case, better go for the nature scene), while teens will enjoy the in-your-face quality that so many acrylic paintings possess.
